More than two dozen Olympic medallists, mentors and additional international athletes have endorsed a letter demanding a stop to the death penalty of a boxing titleholder and trainer, who is facing execution in the nation.

Escalating International Outrage

Amidst rising international outrage over the country's increasing application of executions as a tool of oppression, the forcefully phrased statement denounces the authorities's decision to uphold the death sentence of the athlete.

Vafaei Sani, thirty, from the city in the northern province, was arrested for being involved in national uprisings in 2019 and accused of aiding an resistance movement. He has spent 60 months in detention, where he has been abused and held in seclusion.

“Sport is designed to promote hope, solidarity, and courage,” the signatories wrote. “The death penalty of a winner for his political views is a direct assault on these principles and a caution to every athlete who dares to speak out.
