The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
